Let us trace some of the most popular indoor games such as, Indian Rummy that were played in ancient India.

Pachisi/ Chaupar

This board game is said to be the “national game of India” as its origins lie in ancient India. Played on a symmetrical cross like board, it is a game for 2-4 people. The name of this game is derived from the Hindi pronunciation of number 25 -‘pacchis’. The game is played using 6-7 cowrie shells and the player’s pieces move around the board based on the number of shells resting with aperture upwards. The cruciform playing area of the game traditionally has a board embroidered on cloth.

The Game of Cards

Known as Krida-patram, this game of cards was one of the favorite games of ancient India. This card game of Indian origin was patronized by nobilities and royalties of the country. The ancient Indian cards were made on cloth and had the motifs of Ramayana and Mahabharata depicted on the back of them. Unlike the set of 13 cards which we play Indian rummy with, there were sets of 8, 9 and 10 in the Indian Courts.

Snakes and Ladders

Ancient India knew this as ‘Moksha Patam’ or ‘Mokshapat’ and was basically used to teach ‘dharma’ or values to children. Later, the British named it Snakes and Ladders. Following the squares of faith, reliability, generosity, knowledge and asceticism one reached the 100th square that was Nirvana or ‘Moksha’. You had to be aware of the vices that the snakes represented of – disobedience, arrogance, vulgarity, theft, lying, drunkenness, debt, anger, greed, pride, murder and lust.

The Game of Dice

The earliest references for the game of dice can be found in our Rig Veda and AtharvaVed. With the archeological evidences of oblong dice having been found in ‘Harrapan’ sites, the dice is attributed to India. It is believed that it was from here that this game of dice later spread westwards to Persia and influenced their board games. Since 3rd Century BC the dices just like some card games, were used for gambling.

More such interesting games originated in India are played throughout the world, these days.
